Liverpool Indisputable Favorites Against United

It’s time for one of the Premier League’s historic fixtures this Sunday as bitter rivals United and Liverpool face each other at the Theater of Dreams. Long in the shadow of Ferguson’s United sides, Liverpool have emerged from the abyss stronger and deadlier than ever since the Scotsman retired. Jurgen Klopp’s rebuild has been a fantastic success, with the Scousers fancied as the indisputable favorites for the upcoming fixture.

Liverpool come into this fixture as league leaders, having won every single one of their games this season, and also as Champions League title holders. United, on the other hand are playing Europa League football and are only 3 points above the relegation zone.

While Liverpool boast one of the best squads in the World and one of the best coaches who is having no trouble getting the best out of his players, United are stuck with many sub-par players among a few quality ones in an expensively assembled squad, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer failing to get anything worthy of United’s illustrious history out of them.

Liverpool won the UCL last season and finished 2nd by a single point in the EPL. United finished 6th in the league and reached the Champions League quarter finals.

With the arrival of Maguire and Wan-Bissaka, United have been solid defensively – they are fourth in terms of the least number of goals conceded. However, while upgrading their defense, United disregarded the needs of the attack and midfield and were left short come the end of the transfer window. With Pogba’s and Martial’s injury and Lingard and Mata’s inability to fill the number ten role, United’s attack has been abysmal.

Liverpool, in contrast, have one of the best attacking trios in the World in Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino and can also count on a plethora of world class defensive players in Van Dijk, Fabinho, Alexander Arnold, Robertson and co.

Needless to say, Liverpool are expected to beat United even if the game is at Old Trafford. United fans would probably take a draw right now, if given the option, given the risk of a humiliating defeat at the hands of their old rivals.

The only positive for United fans is their side has beaten Leicester City and Chelsea this season, two teams who have been doing really well. United tend to play well on the counter, against teams who are trying to build and not defend deep. If Martial , James and Rashford are all on the pitch, United may have a chance on the counter.

There’s also the added incentive of playing Liverpool at home and making amends for the horrible defeat at Newcastle before the international break.

Everything indicates United are at risk of being embarrassed by Liverpool, bringing Ole on the cusp of termination, but this is the Premier League – unpredictable and always entertaining – you never know!
