Fantasy Football: GW1 Lessons Learnt

If there’s anything we have learnt from GW1, it’s to trust the heavy hitters from last season. Apart from Chelsea, the whole top six supplied goals and three of them clean sheets.

Sterling (12m) already has a hat-trick and Mo’ Salah (12.5m) a goal and an assist. Paul Pogba, who accumulated plenty of points when Solskjaer joined last year, provided two assists in his first game. Aubameyang scored one and Kane twice.

City kept a clean sheet, so Laporte (6.5m), Ederson and co delivered points. Virgil Van Dijk (6.5m) scored while Trent-Arnold provided an assist. Overall, plenty of players who delivered last year showed they are ready to show more this season.

The Super Cup final in midweek brought some more insights in Liverpool and Chelsea’s teams. Sadio Mane (11.5m), back from vacation late after playing in the AFCON 2019 final scored twice, giving us FPL managers a dilemma. Pedro (7m) was lively on the wings, as he was against United in GW1. Giroud replaced Tammy Abraham at the front of the attack, meaning Lampard has not chosen who his number 9 will be yet.

With Alisson injured, instead of going for another team’s keeper, it might be best to transfer in Adrian (4.5m). The Spaniard was heroic in the Super Cup in Istanbul and Liverpool play Southampton next. A cheap keeper from a strong team liberates funds for more expensive players. [Edit: Klopp mentioned Adrian is a doubt for the weekend]

Another bargain is Kelly (4m) from Palace who face Sheffield United who have their own bargain defender Lundstram (4m). So is Zinchenko (5.5m) from City.

For GW2, Aubameyang’s Arsenal play Burnley so I would go with him instead of Kane, who plays City. Both are at 11m. The other two expensive players could be Mane/Salah and Sterling, who should be mainstays for the rest of the season. Buy them, keep them, do not worry about them, barring injuries.

I still recommend assist machine Pogba (8.5m) for United’s GW2 game versus Wolves and Pedro (7m) from Chelsea who face Leicester at home. After two defeats for Lampard, Chelsea should bounce back against the Foxes and Pedro has looked sharp recently.
