Madrid 2019: Liverpool absolute favorites to win UCL

Now that Arsenal have been obliterated by Chelsea in the Europa League, we turn ourselves towards the biggest game of the season, the Champions League final! Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium hosts the final this year, which pits last year’s unlucky finalists Liverpool FC against first timers Tottenham Spurs.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp is no stranger to Champions League finals, having lost one with Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and another one last year with this same Liverpool side. The two major differences for the 2019 edition is that Klopp comes into this one as absolute favorites and with the best squad he has ever assembled.

Klopp’s Liverpool were runners up in last season’s UCL

With Dortmund, Klopp faced German giants Bayern Munich, who have made it a habit to dominating the scene locally. Last year, they faced a Real Madrid side with the likes of Ronaldo, Modric, Varane and Bale, coached by a certain Zinedine Zidane. In comparison, Spurs are much more manageable.

Pochettino and his team men are rookies in a game of this magnitude. Their football is pleasing and they were a joy to watch against City and Ajax but Liverpool should be able to outplay them. Apart from Eriksen, Son and Harry Kane, I don’t think any other Spurs player would get in the Liverpool eleven when everybody’s fit. Moreover, they have only managed to beat Liverpool once in their last fourteen encounters in all competitions, losing both games in the recent 2018/2019 EPL season.

Champions League final Combined Eleven according to the Overhead Kick

The magnificence of this Liverpool squad was brought to light this season. They challenged City till the last game of the league, racking up a record number of points for a runner up. They navigated a tricky group with PSG and Napoli and dispatched a Bayern team that used to dwarf Klopp’s Dortmund with relative ease in the UCL round of 16.

Their most impressive performance came against FC Barcelona. Even though they lost the first leg 3-0, Liverpool played really well. I remember thinking how incredible it is that Liverpool outplayed the Spanish champions for large periods of the game, only to be undone by the individual talent of Suarez and Messi. In the return leg, they upped their level even more and the rest is history.

This is the best Liverpool team we have seen in years and they could very well carve a piece of the history books for themselves on Saturday by winning the ultimate trophy: the UEFA Champions League!
